WE'RE BACK BABBYY. After a little spring break, EmJ reclaims the mic and sits down with Simone Gamble, Jessica Tingle, and Sabrina Alvarado to talk different hair textures at camp. All three guests grew up going to camp and often found themselves left to their own devices when it came to maintaining their hair. The three share experiences that played a part in their hair journeys and cultivate a long list of reasons hair and hygiene affirming practices should be taught during your staff training, among so so much more.

Jessica Tingle

Jessica Tingle is anti-racism educator with over 10 years of  experience in camping and outdoor recreation - and a lifetime of knowledge on what it’s like to be fat, Black, and queer in outdoor spaces. She has been working in DEI with an emphasis on decolonizing the outdoors since 2016, and is deeply passionate about the work of deconstructing white supremacy in its many forms across outdoor industries. Jessica has been an enthusiastic and driven member of the OAAARS facilitation team since winter 2020, and became a lead consultant in 2021. She is deeply passionate about the intersection of social justice and outdoor recreation, and likes to get outdoors whenever possible - especially if there’s water involved. In between working to decolonize relationships to nature and the great outdoors, she can be found mushroom foraging, playing guitar, or snoozing in a hammock. 

Sabrina Alvarado

Meet Sabrina Alvarado, a passionate advocate for education and college access, hailing from Brooklyn, NY. With a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from SUNY University at Buffalo and a Master's in Higher and Postsecondary Education from Teacher's College, Columbia University, Sabrina brings a wealth of expertise to her work.

For over 5 years, Sabrina has championed the college entrance process and college student experience for first-year, first-generation, low-income, and historically underrecognized students. Her deep-rooted connection to summer camp spans a decade as a camper and later as staff after her college graduation.

In addition to her direct work with students, Sabrina is a consultant for OAAARS. With a relentless dedication to equity and community empowerment, Sabrina continues to shape the future for youth and young people with compassion and leadership.
